Okehampton-based charity the House of Rachel is appealing for donations to help a trio of Bulgarian orphans go to college.

In Bulgaria, there is minimal provision for those forced to leave orphanages at 18, often with no money, job or family. Through a varied programme of diverse projects, the House of Rachel aims to improve the lives of vulnerable Bulgarian youngsters and equip them with the skills to cope later in life.

Charity founder Andrew Morgan said: 'We recently learned of three children — a sister and two brothers — from Barzitsa and Krivnya orphanages who had been presented with an opportunity to go to college. This is very rare and so we wanted to make sure they were able to go.

'In order for the orphanage director to send them to college, she needed to secure funding of £40 per child per month, to cover accommodation, food, transport and other costs.

'We launched an urgent appeal and quickly raised £750, which will ensure that the children can attend college for at least six months. A few people are contributing towards the monthly costs with regular giving, which will also help, but we could always do with more to ensure they can complete their courses.

'The girl, Kremi, is the oldest of the three and she is learning English and will write newsletters to us from time to time to let us know how the three of them are getting on.

'The last time the House of Rachel took a building team to Bulgaria, we were able to invite Kremi to be our translator for a day. She did brilliantly and now has a reference for future employers.

'Two of our party got lost and ended up in a police station. Without Kremi to help us out, they may still be there now!'
