TWO new groups for the over 50s in Okehampton have been set up at Castle Ham Lodge by Time for Life, including a group aiming to help those with memory loss.
The new Reminiscence Group aims to build confidence for those suffering from memory loss. The purpose is to support anyone who is experiencing memory problems by creating an atmosphere where people feel safe enough to share memories.
There will be a variety of activities to create stimulating and enjoyable sessions, including some loaned from the Devon Library Resource Service. Memory boxes, with a range of items likely to rekindle memories, and sessions linked to the changing seasons and topical events are also planned. Everyone will be listened to, and in return listen to others.
The sessions will run on Tuesdays from 10.30am to noon, starting on November 6.
Anyone with household recollections that may stimulate memories, such as iconic household items with famous logos or branding, or old records, are asked to lend them to the group to help others.
The second of the new groups is a session of the popular sing-a-long sessions, which already run every Monday morning. The new sessions will take place on Fridays from 2pm to 3.30pm. Using a repertoire from the 1890s to the present, everyone just needs to enjoy singing and the company of others.
Tme for Life is a community mentoring service funded by Devon County Council. In addition to one-to-one mentoring, which aims to improve quality of life of socially isolated people, TFL sets up groups and activities to help reduce social isolation.
Other TFL groups at Castle Ham Lodge include seated exercise, an art club, writing circle, Oke-Dokey coffee morning and fun with fabric.
The two new groups, as well as the other existing groups, are made possible through funding from Okehampton United Charity.
