THE SOUTH Tawton and District Local History Society would be pleased to hear from anyone with information about the American army units that were based in the parish during the second world war.
In preparation for the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944, men from what is believed to be the 4th Infantry of the United States Army, were stationed at South Zeal.
The mobile unit, with white officers and black soldiers, had a field laundry at the site where a Wain Homes development now stands.
Lorinda Legge, a member of the history society, said the soldiers were most welcomed by villagers and were invited to the pubs and local dances.
Anyone with any information should please contact Lorinda on 01837 840326.
The society is also planning an exhibition illustrating the impact on the village when the Ramsley copper mine closed down in 1910.
The exhibition, marking the centenary of the closure, will be held at the Victory Hall, South Zeal on Saturday and Sunday, October 30 and 31.
