A TALK on the London Underground will be the focus for the Okehampton and District Local History Society on September 11.
David Mead, who until his retirement was chief civil engineer, will be the speaker from 7.30pm. The London Underground this year celebrates its 150th year.
In July John Allan gave an interesting talk on Exeter Cathedral's Bishop's Throne, with its renowned mediaeval canopy. There was no talk in August, but the group had a walk around the old industrial workings at Meldon. Next month Nick Atkinson will be speaking on the history of Dartmoor as a national park.
Meetings of the history society are held on the second Wednesday of the month, at 7.30pm, in the Ockment Hall at the rear of the Ockment Community Centre in Okehampton. New members are always welcome — anyone interested should call secretary Jane Lehni on 01837 840087. Non-members £2 admittance.
