J STREET Diner in Okehampton is holding a charity event next weekend in order to raise money for various cancer charities.
On Saturday, April 1 staff will be hosting a two-day fundraiser in order to support two charities as well as remember loved ones who have sadly lost their battle with cancer.
Jan Halpin, owner of J Street Diner, said: ‘We hope to raise money for these great charities by selling cream teas, coffees, homemade cakes, sweets and snacks. The fundraiser will be in aid of Worldwide Cancer Research and Exeter-based cancer charity FORCE.
‘The diner will be open all day (9am to 5pm) and we are running the fundraiser throughout Saturday and Sunday.
‘We welcome people to come along to support the event and help raise money for a good cause!’
The fundraiser will be in aid of Worldwide Cancer Research and Exeter-based cancer charity FORCE.
Jan, who sadly lost her husband to cancer four years ago, said that the event would be a good way to remember loved ones and raise money for a good cause.
Teas and coffees with a choice of cake will be sold for £1.50 and all of the proceeds will be given to charity.
Jan also said there would be collection pots placed around the diner and that any donations would be greatly appreciated.
The J Street Diner fundraiser will also be used to rally support for relatives of staff members who will be running a marathon for charity.
Jamie Halpin and Heidi Wells will be both be taking part in this year’s London Marathon.
Okehampton resident Heidi Wells, who is a member of the Okehampton Running Club, will also be taking part in the 26.2-mile race. She said she wished to raise as much money as possible for FORE — a South West cancer charity which works locally to support people affected by cancer.
Jamie Halpin, son of diner owner Jan, said he would be running the marathon in memory of his dad and hoped to raise more than £2,200 for Worldwide Cancer Research — a charity which funds cancer research projects all over the world. 'I'm doing the London Marathon for my dad and running in his name,' said Jamie. 'Training has been pretty tough, I injured my knee slightly but recently completed a half marathon and I'm up to 15-mile runs with just 6-weeks to go 'So far I've raised 1,200 and I'm working hard to reach the London Marathon target of £2,200. 'The more money I can raise for the charity the better — Worldwide Cancer Research work globally to fund projects, helping to fight cancer and raising awareness. It is such a great cause.'
