AN air cadet from Sourton has been chosen from thousands to represent the UK during this year's International Air Cadet Exchange Association (IAEC) visit to the Republic of Korea. Joe Seymour, 19, of Okehampton ATC, will spend two weeks in Korea at the end of July together with young air cadets from many nations. They will experience the country's diverse culture as well as visit many sites primarily focused on aviation. While in Korea, Joe will visit the Demilitarization Zone (DMZ) and the war memorial of the United Nations Forces who fell in the Korean War of 1950-53. A Devon resident and well-known author, John Hollands, recently met Joe. Mr Hollands as a 19-year -old National Service subaltern saw active service in Korea. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and began his career as a novelist as a result of his experiences during that traumatic time. His first book, 'The Dead, the Dying and the Damned' describing his role in the war was published in 1956. Having recently read the book, Joe was thrilled to meet the author. It is somewhat sobering for Joe to realize that he, now just 19, is the same age as was John Hollands when called up in the early 50s.
