WEST Devon residents, communities and businesses are being invited to join a nationwide 'Lights Out' on Monday August 4, the day that Britain entered the First World War one hundred years ago. Everyone can take part in the poignant centenary remembrance by turning off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on August 4, and leaving on a single light or candle. War was declared against Germany on August 4, 1914 and more than 16 million people died in the conflict. 'Lights Out' is an opportunity for everyone to be part of the commemoration. The event is being organised by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and is supported by West Devon Borough Council. Cllr Christine Marsh, Mayor of West Devon, said: 'This was a terrible war in our history and we owe so much to so many whose lives were lost in this most bitter conflict. '"Lights Out" is our opportunity to remember them and we hope it will inspire everyone to reflect from their own individual perspective.'
