A 'MAGICAL' and 'beautiful' evening was had by those who stood out in the streets and took part in the first ever Okehampton Lanterns Procession last Thursday.
Organised by Wren Music, two procession groups left Okehampton Rugby Club and Giblands last Thursday evening, walking through the town with lanterns. Crowds lined the street as both processions, inspired by the East and West Okement rivers, weaved their way through the town's streets to the finale at Simmons Park, where lanterns were hung in trees, and lantern carriers were greeted with songs the West Devon Folk Choir and Okehampton Youth Roots Ensemble in the park bandstand.
Marilyn Tucker, artistic director for Wren Music, said: 'The night was very exciting, and everything went wonderfully. There were hundreds of people on the streets and in Simmons Park for the finale, to watch 90 lanterns weave their way through the town. It was magical, and the lanterns were so beautiful.'
Two of the lanterns, a giant salmon and a giant heron, were constructed by renowned kinetic artist Gavin Lewery. The salmon lantern was particularly striking, according to Marilyn: 'As the processions reached the park, the one carrying the salmon lantern crossed the bridge over the river. It looked like the salmon was leaping over the river, it was amazing.
'It was a really great success, and I can see this becoming an annual event. We are hoping to organise another procession for next year.'
Despite the success of the first ever procession, Wren Music are not resting on their laurels. They will be holding two feedback events on March 7 where people can drop in and share their views on what made the night a success, and where things could be improved.
The first will run in the Church Hall on Market Street from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, and the second session will run in the Ockment Centre from 7pm to 9pm. Everyone will be welcome to share their opinion.
The team at Wren Music expressed thanks to St John Ambulance, Okehampton Rotary, the Okehampton Lions, and everyone who supported the event and made it such a success.
