CONGRATULATIONS are certainly due to those responsible for the 'On the Hour' World War One 'Lest We Forget' commemoration presentation in St Stephen's Church, Okehampton, on August 4. Enhanced by the moving soundtrack of the Show of Hands' album 'Centenary', the photographs of Okehampton's finest reached across a century to ensure that while none of those present at 3pm that day had known these brave men, and women, they were certainly remembered in honour and with pride. Just one location shown, among many, was enough to take me to a scene my father experienced, but, with tear-filled eyes, only seldom spoke of. The entire presentation, it is hoped, might become available to be shared with others, the relatives possibly of those that marched away from our town, never to return, and today's school children, and young people perhaps particularly, all becoming ever-conscious of horrific conflicts in their times. Through the next four years there will be many reminders of that distant conflict that consumed so many, but the sound and visual portraits put together by talented people for that presentation, hold the potential for fundraising to help young soldiers today whose bodies have been seriously damaged by continuing warfare. Let those memories be shared, to help others, if possible, please. Roy Radford South Zeal
