Okehampton raised £11,695 for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal in 2007 — a magnificent contribution to Devon's total of £753,113.
The RBL's Devon county office last year received more than 900 requests for assistance, as a result of which more than £770,000 was paid in grants.
Poppy Appeal organiser Val Hoar said: 'With the number of welfare cases increasing, it is essential that we identify people who need the legion's help.
'Perhaps there is someone who may need a little extra help, especially with winter and Christmas around the corner. Anyone who served in the British Armed Forces is eligible for assistance, as well as dependents.'
RBL research has shown that a significant number of older members of the ex-service community live on low or very low incomes. The legion is campaigning with Age Concern to improve the incomes of older people who live below the minimum needed for a healthy lifestyle.

Val adds: 'The Okehampton RBL branch is doing its utmost to highlight not only the problems our older people face but that it is here to offer help.
'However, with increasing demands on Poppy Appeal and other funds, it is important that help goes to those who need it most.
'In the past, small Christmas gifts, in the form of vouchers, have been given to those known to be in need. However, to ensure the most needy are helped, individuals, families, caring neighbours and friends are urged to contact the branch so that each request can be considered individually.
'There has always been tremendous support for the Poppy Appeal in the Okehampton area; long may that tradition continue. But, it is essential that those who give — both financially and in other ways — are assured that the funds they raise are used in accordance with the Royal British Legion's mission to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or have served.
'Please help us to ensure that these aims are met.'
