Hatherleigh butcher Adrian Edwards was awarded the prize for top male Hatherleigh Carnival collector on Sunday (December 12).
Despite getting stuck in traffic on the way to the carnival, Mr Edwards raised the largest sum of money of all male collectors, and in recognition of his achievement, Hatherleigh Carnival Committee member Cindy Squire presented him with a trophy.
With social distancing in place, the presentation took place outside Mr Edwards' premises, Brickyard Farm Shop, and Ms Squire and Mr Edwards bumped elbows instead of shaking hands.
Mr Edwards said: ’I couldn’t believe it was £417. I usually collect about £200 but people were being more generous than normal and there were many more people than normal. I was a bit late getting there because of the traffic.
’I was pleased for the carnival. They had a lot of extra expenses this year with a change in route and being unable to use the market. It’s fortunate that the carnival is so successful.’
The money will go towards funding next year’s carnival.
