Hatherleigh’s play park is set to be redeveloped in the next couple of months, thanks to the hard work and fundraising of two parents.

Certain parts of the current under fives park are starting to rot and look tired, so two Hatherleigh residents took it upon themselves to instigate a project to refurbish and improve the facilities.

Donna Lewis, town councillor and member of Hatherleigh Primary School’s PTFA, and Adam Hill, headteacher of Exbourne Primary School, who both use the park with their children, got together to conduct a public consultation and apply for grant funding to get the project in motion.

With £9,975 from the Big Lottery Grant, £5,000 from the Moor Management Committee, as well as funding from Hatherleigh Town Council, carnival committee and a community Crowdfunding page, the project is now in a position for work to start.

The size of the park will be increased, new fencing and safety matting will be installed, some equipment already in the park will be retained and spruced up and a large, climbing play centre will be installed as well as a shelter area for the children.

Work will start in the next couple of weeks and it is hoped to be completed by Easter.

Donna said: ‘The community all said it was a great idea, it needed to be one and were very excited at the prospect of having somewhere safe and enjoyable for our under 5s.

‘It will also mean that the preschool will be able to use it as part of their sessions.’
