THE well attended display of Okehampton historical documents and photographs by the Okehampton branch of the Devonshire Association last month has encouraged the association to organise another event.

The event will take the form of 'Okehampton's Past' and will be held at Okehampton Conservative Club on Thursday, September 19 at 7pm, with guest speaker Mike Wreford.

There will be many unique and perhaps untold stories of Okehampton personalities, including the woman with strong connections to the town, who went on to become the Queen of England following the mysterious death of her husband — the true story of Lady Howard, the legendary ghost of Okehampton Castle who was married and widowed three times before she was 16, the Okehampton MP who brought down the Duke of York (and his 10,000 men), the Commander in Chief of the English Army, the connection with Daphne de Maurier, the sad end to Dozy Weeks, the curious adventures of a clergyman and many other stories and anecdotes.

At the end of the talk, there will be an informal quiz by Okehampton Auctions for charity, inviting guests to identify and value antiques and collectables — Steve Wreford and Caroline Shaw will be on hand to reveal the answers.

With many years of experience in the auction business, they will be on hand to give an opinion on any items that guests might wish to bring to the club on the night.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
