THE national charity Rethink Mental Illness has launched a support group for people affected by mental health problems in Okehampton.
The weekly group will provide a space for people who have a mental illness and their carers to share their experiences and get information and advice on a wide range of issues.
Laura Delamar, who works for Rethink Mental Illness in Okehampton, is one of the group's organisers. She said: 'One in four people in Okehampton will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives. Having a mental health problem, or being a family member of someone who does, can be an isolating experience.
'Due to the stigma which still surrounds mental illness, many people find it hard to speak openly about the struggles they may face.
'The group will provide a sympathetic, non-judgmental listening space where people can share their thoughts and feelings.
'A lot of people find it really valuable to speak with others who have been through similar experiences to them, and it's also a chance to socialise.'
Rethink Mental Illness has run services and support groups to change people's lives and challenge attitudes about mental illness for 40 years.
They directly support almost 60,000 people a year across England to help them through crises, live independently and realise they are not alone.
The group will meet every Wednesday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm in Okehampton Baptist Church.
The organisers would welcome any donations such as old games, jigsaws and craft materials for the group.
