AN Okehampton town councillor has received national acknowledgement for her tireless work supporting a local community arts charity.

Jan Goffey was among 30 'cultural champions' selected from across the country celebrated for cultural philanthropy and individual giving in the local community. She was chosen for her volunteer work supporting Wren Music.

Jan attended a special reception held at the Foundling Museum in Holborn, London at the end of January, to collect her prize. She was presented with a certificate to acknowledge her achievements from Nick Hurd MP, the Minister for Civil Society.

Wren Music's artistic diretor Marilyn Tucker accompanied Jan to the event. She explained just why Jan was a deserving recipient of the honour: 'She has volunteered each week for two years to tidy up and catalogue our huge music library.

'This has saved us both time and money, because our busy music leaders now know exactly where to find copies of music scores as they make their way out a whole range of community and educational music-making sessions each week.

'Not content with keeping herself busy in this way, Jan inspires others to join in by taking charge of all volunteers for our community music groups, for events in villages and neighbourhoods, and at our children's workshop events.

'So her involvement continues far beyond the actual tasks she is organising, but improving the quality of life for large numbers of people. And on top of all her efforts she still donates money to our Friends scheme each month.'

Wren Music welcomes new volunteers, and new members of its Wren Friends scheme.
