GROUPS to help unemployed people develop the skills they need to find work could soon be starting in Okehampton.
At a meeting of the town council's planning committee last week it was confirmed the council will support the provision of 'work clubs' in the town.
The work clubs scheme is part of the new government plan to 'get Britain working' and can be set up anywhere in the country.
The clubs support jobseekers by providing a place to meet, exchange tips, share experiences and receive support to help them find work.
They also give people an opportunity to boost their confidence, meet employers from the local area, and build contacts.
Town councillor and former mayor Kay Bickley said: Some similar types of courses are already running at the Ockment Centre, so they will be well placed to train up organisers for the proposed clubs.
'It is possible that we may be able to assist with start up costs or at the very least assist with applications for funding from bodies such as the Okehampton United Charity.'
Around 230 people are currently claiming jobseekers allowance in the Okehampton area.?It is hoped this number could decrease if the work clubs go ahead.
