OKEHAMPTON and District Community Transport Group has purchased a new eight-seater, wheelchair accessible vehicle.
The group bought the vehicle, which can fit up to three wheelchairs, after being awarded grants from Okehampton United, The Clare Milne Trust and Devon County Council.
Co-ordinator from Okehampton and District Community Transport Group, Sue Wonnacott, said: 'We would like to help everyone to access healthcare and social events, particularly those rurally isolated.
'Some people would like to visit the cinema in Okehampton or attend swimming or exercise sessions which is now possible.
'Residents can speak to us about any other requirements and we will do our best to provide transport.'
The group's other services will continue, including the ring and ride bus service which is available Monday to Friday from residents' front doors.
Mrs Wonnacott added: 'The service enables the frail, elderly or rurally isolated to access shopping facilities and a Saturday special to places of interest.
'The community car service is available seven days a week, subject to a driver being available. We do ask for 48-hours notice whenever possible.
'We are also looking for volunteer drivers, so if anyone is looking for a rewarding job, which would help people access healthcare and improve their quality of life, I'd ask them to phone us.'
The new blue vehicle with a green and yellow logo, will be available for a variety of uses including taking patients to healthcare appointments, trips to places of interest and for private hire to groups with or without a driver.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer car driver would need to use their own car with a mileage rate paid.
The group is also looking for a volunteer driver for the new vehicle.
For more information phone Mrs Wonnacott on 01837 55000 between 9am and 4pm.
