OKEHAMPTON golf club, which celebrates its centenary this month, is unveiling new facilities which promise to draw in younger players and provide a boost to local sporting facilities. West Devon Borough Council has given a grant of £4,000 to the club, for the installation of a computerised indoor simulator and a major upgrade to the kitchen equipment. In addition a new six hole short course is under construction within the main outdoor course and will be available by the end of August. The whole project has cost around £80,000 with large contributions coming from Okehampton United Charity and Sport England among others. The indoor simulator and practice area was officially opened at an evening of celebration at the club last week. Club treasurer Graham Harding said: 'Before, our practice facilities were minimal, making it difficult to attract new members, particularly juniors. We hope with the wonderful new indoor simulator and short outdoor course we will be able to encourage more people to come along and play golf. 'We will be working with local schools and disabled groups to widen the participation in this enjoyable sport.' Cllr Robert Sampson, the borough council's community services chairman, said: 'It is very rewarding to see a club with such a long history expand and develop in this way. This project has the potential to attract a whole new generation to the sport and having such a first class facility in Okehampton will also benefit the wider community. 'I would like to congratulate the club, and the volunteers who support it, for bringing this ambitious project to fruition.' Borough councillors for Okehampton, Cllr Kevin Ball, Mayor of West Devon Cllr Christine Marsh, Cllr Tony Leech and Cllr Mike Morse have all given their support to the project.
