THE BBC's smash hit The Great British Bake Off has reminded Britain of its love of baking — North Tawton is no different, as it held its own 'Great North Tawton Bake Off'.

The event at the town's youth and community centre on Saturday encouraged people of all ages to get involved and bake a cake. There were three categories — six to eleven-year-olds were challenged to make a fridge cake, 12 to 18-year-olds were challenged to make cupcakes while those over the age of 18 were invited to make a Victoria sponge.

The winner of the adult category was Doreen Hiscock, whose delicious Victoria sponge narrowly beat that of Betty Mugridge, who came second and Julie King in third place. Junior prize went to Ellie Squires who won the cup cakes class.

Felicity Penrice won the best fridge cake with Jimmy Scrutton and Kieran Squire also runners up. The event was in aid of the town youth club and Kirsty Tizzard from Kirsty's Kitchen and Sue Hooper were the judges.
