A fundraiser held by Okehampton air cadets in memory of their padre’s much-loved late wife has raised more than £2,000 for Hospiscare.

Cadets, staff and members of 2443 Okehampton squadron’s civilian committee took part in the sponsored walk and coffee morning at their headquarters in memory of Jennifer Bourne, the late wife of squadron padre Simon Bourne and mother of cadets Caleb and Reuben Bourne.

The event at the squadron HQ on Saturday, September 16 saw people take part in a sponsored walk or run along the Granite Way, and enjoy coffee and cake afterwards, raising a total of £2,013.50. This was swelled by an additional £100 donation.

The money was presented to Hospiscare representative Rebecca Botfield on Monday, October 9 at the squadron’s headquarters in Tor Road.

Dave Wilkinson, squadron spokesman, said: ‘The event was as good as it could be. We would much rather not have the money at all and have Jennifer still with us but there was a good turnout and the cadets all pulled together and got quite a bit of sponsorship. The whole family is well thought of in Okehampton.’

Jennifer died at the tragically young age of 45 after a battle with cancer in June this year. Hospiscare was chosen as the beneficiary of the fundraiser as she was nursed in their hospice in Exeter in her last days.
