THE organisers of the Okehampton Lanterns Procession have been working flat out this week to ensure the Friday event is a success.

Throughout half term week, organisers Wren Music have been holding lantern making workshops at their base in Ebenezer Hall, North Street ahead of the procession on Friday night.

Paul Wilson of Wren Music said: ’We have been delighted with the response from the community, we’ve run out of sign in sheets twice and Ebenezer Hall is bursting with the sound of drumming, the laughter of children and the appreciative responses from parents – "we missed all this last year" is a common cry!

’The mountain of wonderful lanterns is growing by the hour. The Dartmoor Ram is a 15 foot high massive moving lantern sculpture which will lead the procession – eagles flying round, a fantastic five foot diameter moon and many other related images including a live fire sculpture will complete the event in the park – drumming and singing will accompany the events.’

The gathering point for the procession is 5.30pm at St James’ Chapel. The procession will set off to Simmons Park at around 6pm, though it may take longer than half an hour to light them all.

The finale is planned for Simmons Park between 6.30pm and 6.45pm. Anyone attending is advised to wear warm clothes and sensible shoes.
