Torrington Colts 5
Okehampton Colts 54
EARLY on saw the hosts compete aggressively at the breakdown causing difficulties for the Okes pack in securing quick and tidy ball.
On a narrow pitch , this restricted the visitors game plan with a game of midfield stalemate dominating .
Through a 'hard yards' approach from the forwards, with good work from captain Hawking and Fishleigh, play was eventually driven towards the Torrington 22 and with the defence giving away a penalty at the breakdown, Kev Dennis slotted the kick to take the lead.
This settled matters and it wasn't long before the Okes were again applying pressure . Even on a narrow pitch the benefits of the forwards driving play wide to create space paid dividends when the ball was spun wide with miss-passes to put Callum Ausden away for a try that Stevens converted excellently from out wide.
The remainder of the first half saw tries from the excellent Gillard who was alert to the charge down, Rickerby and Hawking with Stevens adding the extras with a second conversion bringing the score at the interval to 0 -29 to the Okes.
Several changes were made at half time but momentum was maintained and it didn't take long before play went through several phases with Hawking and Knott prominent , before the backs were released for Dennis to weave his way through the defence for a first score of the half.
The Okes maintained dominance from the restart and with a well struck penalty putting play deep in the home sides 22, a good catch and drive from a line out saw Rob Steptoe peel off from the maul to run in unopposed for Dennis to convert.
To their credit Torrington stuck to their task and after a period of pressure from a pack of forwards that refused to take a backward step all afternoon, the tight head prop crashed over for a well deserved try.
The Okes reasserted themselves with two further tries bringing the final score to 5 -54.
