ON August 3 Okehampton Running Club hosted another challenging fell race. Participants met at the Bearslake Inn, Sourton to try and navigate the 2.8 miles of open moor in the Dartmoor mist.
The course lulled runners into a false sense of security, following a fairly level track from the pub to the viaduct at Lake. Here runners met the open moor, causing them to scramble up slopes, negotiate streams and bogs in an attempt to follow a course shrouded in mist.
ORC's Andy Vallance was the first home in 20 minutes 33 seconds followed in hot pursuit by ORC's race organiser Paul Crease, in 21.08. Male vet 40, Gavin Punchard finished in 21.17 and male vet 50 Mervyn Rice in 25.34.
The first lady home was ORC's Kirstin Phippard in 25.58. The club thank all those who braved the Dartmoor elements and took part and the Bearslake Inn for allowing runners to use their facilities and welcoming the wet and wild runners in for a well deserved post race drink.
Anyone who enjoys the challenge of "off road" racing is welcome to enter the Oke Croak, also hosted by ORC, on Saturday, August 27. Visit http://www.okehamptonrunningclub.com">www.okehamptonrunningclub.com for further details.
