THE people of North Tawton are this month going to recapture the party spirit of the 2012 Olympic and Jubilee summer, with the resurrection of a 100-year-old town event.
The bank holiday weekend of Saturday, May 25 to Monday, May 27 will see the launch of the Nanny Knight's Revel celebrations. The event sees the resurrection of a lost tradition in the town, brought back to recreate the wonderful community spirit of last summer.
Sue Knott from North Tawton said: 'The Revels are an age old event last held in North Tawton some 100 years ago to celebrate the safe return of Nanny Knight, an old lady who had gone missing.
'The townsfolk searched high and low, and to everyone's relief Nanny Knight was eventually found, safe and well, asleep in a cornfield. Her family were so pleased to have her home they organised a celebration, which became known as Nanny Knight's Revels.'
On Saturday, May 25 North Tawton Rugby Club will host a marquee produce and craft show, and a sports day. Sunday, May 26 will see a 'Fun in the Park' day. Both days will include large inflatables, races, demonstrations and children's entertainment. On May 28 the football club will host a football tournament.
A Revels brochure will a full listing of events as well as some puzzles and competitions, are available now from North Tawton Post Office. For more information call 01837 82241.
