MORE than 40 poppy wreaths displayed in the window of Okehampton Post Office is providing a fitting tribute to remember those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of their country.

Each wreath in the George Street post office has been donated by local organisations or individuals as part of this year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Post office owner Allenton Fisher, who himself served in the Royal Navy for 24 years, including the Falklands war, said: 'This is the first time we have put on such a display and with the size of the window it is ideal.

'Many people have stood back and admired it and lots of local organisations have had their pictures taken outside in front of it.

'We should never forget the sacrifices made by our armed forces and with our troops serving in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

'The Poppy Appeal is very much as relevant today as its always been.'

Mr Fisher said he hoped that such a display could be arranged for next year.

Among the 42 wreaths in the post office window are ones from St John Ambulance, North Dartmoor Search and Rescue, Okehampton Lions, Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council, Okehampton Town Council, the Royal British Legion and its Women's section, Rotary International, Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band, the Chamber of Trade, the fire brigade, the police, Scouts and many more.
