THE Olympic dream of a West Devon athlete has received a boost following a fun day of fundraising.

Sticklepath Sports Club and the team behind the 2011 Sticklepath Pram Race have donated £1,000 raised at the event to Georgina 'Gorgs' Geikie, presenting her with her cheque at the Seven Stars Inn in South Tawton.

Georgina shoots pistols to Olympic level, and aims to make it to London 2012. With budgetary constraints her funding has been cut, and in order to make it to the games she is relying on sponsorship and juggling three part-time jobs.

Organisers of the pram race decided to donate the money raised from the event to Georgina to aid her efforts to represent Team GB later this year and give her every chance to clinch an Olympic medal on home soil.

The pram race has become a staple on the Sticklepath calendar, with entries becoming wackier each year.

Entries in the 2011 race included beach bums with their surfboard pram, the Thunderbirds, Robin Hood and his merry men, pirates, monkeys, gnomes and many more. The teams raced through South Zeal and Sticklepath in a mad dash for the finish line.

Paul Warne helped to organise the race. He explained how this year's presentation was a bittersweet affair: 'The Devonshire Inn, our normal venue for presentations, was sadly unavailable due to the sad passing away of landlord John Verner-Jefferys. John had been very involved with the sports club over many years and will be long remembered and much missed.

'I would like to invite everyone to join us in wishing Gorgs the very best of luck at London 2012, in both shooting and carrying the Olympic torch which she has also been selected to do.'

The sports club expressed thanks to everyone who took part in the 2011 pram race, all the pubs and businesses that supported the event, Donna and the staff at the Seven Stars Inn, and to 'Herman', who helps the event run smoothly each year.
