OKEHAMPTON Primary School has announced the departure of one of its most respected and dedicated teachers.
Brian Cunningham, who has been headteacher at the school for 13 years, informed parents and teachers of his decision to retire at the end of last month.
Headteacher from Bow Primary School Hazel Fox will act as interim headteacher at Okehampton Primary for the next two terms.
Mr Cunningham said his decision to leave the school came about earlier than he had first anticipated.
He said: 'Originally I thought I would retire at Christmas, but with a visit to Derriford Hospital planned for early November, I decided it would be best for me and best for the school that I retire at half term.
'Last month I received the results of a recent MRI scan and it was made clear that there was uncertainty about the progress and extent of my Crohn's Disease.
'Following this diagnosis, the hospital consultant has recommended that I need further tests next month.
'Knowing this outcome I decided that it would not be sensible to embark on the next two years of the post-Ofsted action plan when the increased workload and stress may impact on my health and my ability to see the plan through.'
Mr Cunningham said he would miss being a part of the school.
He added: 'I have enjoyed my years of headship at Okehampton Primary School and I have greatly valued the support I have been given by an extremely hard working and dedicated staff, the governing body and the local community.
'I have always considered that Okehampton Primary School is a very special school that has offered the children a very caring and nurturing learning environment.
'It has been a privilege to be head of the school and I will miss the buzz of school life.
'There is a great team at the school and I am confident the school will meet the challenges of the coming years.'
Hazel Fox said: 'My first day was very warming.
'I'm getting the feel of a very community minded school and I look forward to taking on any challenges ahead.
'I have spoken to parents and they all say how lovely and positive the school is and I agree — I am looking forward to my time here.'
