A GENEROUS grant has enabled a Chagford-based arboretum and nursery to buy and install high quality labelling for all its trees.
Stone Lane Gardens near Chagford purchased the labels, supplied by Sheen Botanical Labels, when it received a grant of £2,000 from the Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust.
The funding has enabled the nursery to buy high quality engraved labels, which are specially designed for use on trees and were originally developed for Kew Botanical Gardens.
Manager of Stone Lane Gardens Paul Bartlett said: 'Visitors can now easily identify the species of tree and where it lives in the wild, giving them a greater understanding of the worldwide coverage and variety of these lovely trees.'
Mr Barlett said the labels will help to highlight the important work the garden does as a collection holder in preserving and expanding its national collections of wild origin Birch and Alder trees.
He said: 'This is a project that we have been wanting to carry out for some time, but it has only been with the financial support of the Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust, that we have been able to complete the work, and we are very grateful to them for their assistance.'
Stone Lane Gardens is a not for profit organisation, conserving and researching Birch and Alder trees for the enjoyment and education of the public.
The garden is open all year round, with a collection of more than 1,000 trees.
