THE team at the Proper Job recycling centre in Chagford has announced they have received £7,500 from the Awards for All Lottery Fund to develop the south-westerly corner of their site.

The centre secured planning permission from Dartmoor National Park in September 2015 to develop that part of the site and have been fundraising ever since to bring the project to reality.

Alison Sallis, Proper Job manager, said: ’We plan to build a pole barn which will cover what is for now bric-a-brac and electricals. The pole barn will not only protect the already weathered portable cabins, it will help to make the site more aesthetically pleasing and in keeping with the national park’s criteria.

’Furthermore, we plan to expand our sales area. We will create two new sales rooms. One will house Cots and Tots, a clean dry area for buggies, baby baths and cots, and a new media section which will be the new home for records, CDs, DVDs and household electricals. We are always looking for new ways to promote recycling and reuse, and we pride ourselves in providing a broad service for local people.’

Proper Job was established in 1995 by local people keen to maximise local resources and build local employment. The resource centre diverts waste from landfill and provides local re-use and recycling facilities in a rurally isolated area. The centre is committed to sustainability principles and local job creation, and offer training and skill sharing workshops to promote the benefits of reusing, recycling and reducing in this modern age.

Each year, Proper Job diverts over 100 tonnes of waste from landfill and supports over 200 low income families by providing low cost, recycled household goods. Proper Job is supported by around 15 volunteers a year, employs 20 people and is supported within the community.

The centre is currently strategically focused upon building their capacity to generate earned income through the sale of a diverse range of waste streams.

If you would like to get involved with Proper Job contact [email protected] or go to their spring clean day on April 23. The team will be painting, cleaning, fixing and planting flowers around the site.
