Okehampton and District Local History Society held its annual meeting last month.

Next month there will be a talk by Peter Cripps, on his life as a Queen's trumpeter.

In July Janet Henwood will speak about the fire in Exeter which destroyed the Theatre Royal in 1887.

September sees Ron Carter, tell the history of Harrods, in which he spent all his working life.

In October Jeremy Pearson will speak about Exeter and West Country silver, followed by a talk in November by David Oates, on the history of Chivers jam-makers.

December will see Kevin Whites bring his amazing collections of fans from the 18th century onwards.

There will also be two outings this summer, including a guided walk around Okehampton Castle in August.

Meetings of society are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ockment Centre.

New members are welcome — anyone interested can phone the secretary, Malcolm Francis-Lang on 01837 840158.

Non-members may attend at a charge of £2 per person, which includes tea or coffee.
