A CHARITY that was based in Okehampton is looking for support from the community to fund its latest project. RAPID-International develops and implements disaster response training to areas across the globes prone to disaster or emergency situations. Its latest project is to send a 4x4 Land Rover ambulance and all necessary equipment to the Bolgatanga region of northern Ghana. The ambulance will provide a medical response capability across a wide area encompassing many villages with a combined population of over 15,000 people. Charity volunteers will provide training for the equipment and vehicle, and it will then be manned from a medical centre. The project aims to develop a response strategy and capability lost during devastating floods in the region two years ago. The team is flying for Ghana on July 23, and will stay there for ten days. Project co-ordinator Graham Payne said that the project was currently around £2,000 over budget, and volunteers and representatives from the charity were funding it from their own pockets. He said: 'We have been very well supported by people in Okehampton in the past, and right now we really need financial support. Any help we can get would be fantastic.'
