A PILOT scheme launched in Exeter to help couples in abusive relationships is now being offered to people in Okehampton.
Relate Exeter and District launched the 'Choosing to Change' pilot scheme 18 months ago.
The pilot programme offered an opportunity for people to acknowledge their behaviour, understand the impact of it on their partner, explore the effect on their relationship and begin the process of change.
The scheme could be helpful for people who recognise behaviour such as feeling frequently resentful at their partner, feeling jealous, or controlling their partner.
The pilot lasted for six months and has been thoroughly assessed at a national level. Certain changes have been made as a result of feedback from the first Devon pilot. One of the most important aspects has been to give the abused partner more support from a counsellor.
The assessment process is now lengthier and more detailed. The programme is now available to couples in Okehampton.
Manager Rebecca Wellaway said: 'We are thrilled that, after making some changes to the programme, we are now relaunching Choosing to Change as an ongoing service for couples in this much needed area of work.
'All work within this programme prioritises the safety of the adult who is being abused and any children who might witness it.
'Our aim is to motivate the abuser or controlling partner to understand what they are doing and the impact it has on those around them and then change the behaviour. All counsellors involved have had specialist training.'
Relate Exeter has been partnered by Devon County Council's Action against Domestic Violence and Abuse during the pilot. Following its success, the organisation is hoping to roll the scheme out nationally within the year.
