AN?OKEHAMPTON woman has started a project which hopes to document stories from people who lived during World War Two.
Laura Summerwill, 33, discovered a personal interest in the accounts of veterans when her elderly family members started to share memories of everyday life in that time.
With a group of people in Lincolnshire, Laura spoke loosely about turning their interests into a project for four or five months before seeking advice from local historical organisations.
Laura said: 'Time is running out to document stories of everyday accounts from the World War Two era especially. Our group really wants to push forward to keep these stories safe for future generations.
'We are looking for personal accounts that have a human element to them rather than a sensationalised story, pieces written in the veterans' own words that can make personal connections with others.'
The group, made up of volunteers, has created a website and social media accounts in an attempt to reach out to locals who know of a friend or family member, that might be interested in sharing a story over a tea or coffee.
The project, funded by donations, will include recording interviews and preparing the stories for publication.
Saving the Stories has also been in contact with the Okehampton branch of the Royal British Legion to discuss the project.
Laura added: 'If we are successful in gathering stories from this era we are looking to expand to other eras. We are hopeful that this could be the start of something bigger.'
