NORTHLEW Silver Band celebrated their centenary at the weekend, with a hog-roast and afternoon of fun in the village playing fields last Saturday.

Bands from Hatherleigh, Okehampton and members of Holsworthy Band joined in the fun, with the afternoon ending with a massed band extravaganza.

There were photos of the band's 100-year history to look at in the marquee, and fun and games in the fields including a bouncy castle and face painting.

Chairman Martin Perry said: 'The day went very well indeed. There was a real village atmosphere, with people of every age taking part, from small children on the bouncy castle to the older residents sitting in the marquee and enjoying the array of photographs.

'We also had lots of photos on display, about sixty or seventy in total. They were of a wide range of the band's history, and extremely interesting.

'We had about fifty bandsmen in total, and it made for quite a noise! The weather for the day was perfect, absolutely ideal.

'Everything went well, and I've had comments from people telling me what a lovely day they had, which was very nice to hear.'
