MELDON resident Simon Medlyn undertook the challenge of cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End recently to raise money for the Mountain Rescue Group.
Together with close friend Will Robertson, Simon set off from John O'Groats on Saturday October 8, cycling along the 908-mile route in nine days, reaching Land's End on Sunday October 17.
The two passed through Okehampton on Saturday October 16, staying the night before heading off the next morning to complete the final leg of their journey.
Simon and Will are used to such adventurous activities, having worked in the outdoor leisure industry for a number of years since qualifying from Bicton College.
Simon has organised white-water expeditions lasting several months to far flung destinations such as Ecuador and the Himalayas. Such activities developed his appreciation for the work of the Mountain Rescue Group.
He said: 'Any outdoor adventure activity has its risks and there are many people around the world that owe their lives and survival to rescue groups such as Mountain Rescue, most of which are voluntary groups that rely on charitable donations.
'Fortunately, neither Will nor I have so far had to call or rely on the help of those groups but once we decided on doing the John O'Groats to Land's End ride, it seemed appropriate to do it with some purpose in mind. In light of Will and my background, Mountain Rescue seemed a fitting cause.'
The ride has almost raised the target of £1,000, but they are still looking for donations to help them reach four figures.
