South Devon premier
Ashburton AFC 1
Chagford 1
CHAGFORD came home from the south side of the moor somewhat frustrated at not having earned more than a single point.
An inspired home goalkeeper, a missed retaken penalty and a debatable offside decision all combined to deny the visitors despite a fine display.
Chagford carried the game to their hosts and comfortably dominated the early exchanges. Jon de Cruz found width on the right, Chadwick and Gavillet bossed the midfield, Brown and Botham looked strong at the back.
After 20 minutes, the visitors were awarded a penalty. Davis took it, scored but was ordered to retake by the referee. Davis's retake was superbly saved, denying a deserved lead.
Chagford heads stayed up though, with Miller, Chadwick and Scott all being denied or being guilty of near misses.
Ashburton came into the match a little more in the second half but found the returning Saul Scarry on form, in Chagford's goal.
But it was the Ashes who went ahead. Scarry initially saved the first shot but the ball squirmed free to Grute who had a simple tap-in.
Within five minutes Chagford were level with a similar goal. Steve Scott's initial shot was saved but rebounded to his feet. The striker sidestepped one challenge and fired home into the opposite corner of the net.
Chagford continued to press but without reward. It was in the dying moments they were to feel their worst frustration as Scott had a second goal denied by the assisitant's flag. Chadwick's cross shot came off the far post, for Scott to gleefully stroke the ball home only to be judged offside in spite of coming through the defence.
Having controlled much of the game, Chagford felt bitterly disappointed.
