ONE of Okehampton's most eagerly anticipated annual events returns tonight (Thursday), as Edwardian Evening marks the start of the town's Christmas celebrations.
Kicking off at 5.30pm, throngs of shoppers will fill the town centre for an evening of late-night shopping, traditional sights, music and Christmas carols.
The mayor's 'Seven Carols at Seven' service starts at 7pm in Red Lion Yard, with music from Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band.
For more music, the Okehampton College Big Band and Choir will perform a concert from 6pm to 9pm in the Charter Hall, for people looking to escape the cold and enjoy some fantastic Christmas cheer.
Specially for the children and young at heart, Father Christmas will be in his grotto in the Museum of Dartmoor Life.
Those looking for food throughout the evening can enjoy the hog roast on Fore Street, or pay a visit to one of the town's pubs for warm hearty grub.
Other attractions include Morris dancing, barbershop singers, chestnut roasting, a barrel organ, and children can enjoy rides and face painting.
The event has been organised by the Okehampton and District Chamber of Trade.
Chairman Ian Bailey said: 'Enjoy Edwardian Evening and enjoy Okehampton's shops and businesses not only over the festive period, but all of 2013, as by supporting each other and our town, we will survive this difficult time.'
