THE great work of Chagford's Cancer Research UK committee has had a wonderful boost thanks to Waitrose's Community Matters scheme. The organisation was recently one of the charities chosen to take part in the Okehampton store's green token scheme, and their participation has raised £630 for the group. The group puts on two main fundraisers each year — a big breakfast in the spring, and a street market on the first Saturday of August, which has now been running for 60 years. Vanessa Garratt, a former chairman of the group, said that the money was vitally important to help continue research into cancer, which has a place close to her heart after her son battled the disease.
