BRIDESTOWE Cricket Club's relative success on the field in 2009 has brought the club face to face with some problems for next season.
For a long time last year the first XI faced the likelihood of immediate relegation from Division C of the Devon League after their promotion in 2008. However, a wonderful run of victories in August ensured that they retained their place. As one of the only sides in the top four divisions of the league not to employ a professional of any sort, this was a considerable feat.
Meanwhile their second XI was promoted as champions of division B of the Tamar League and this young side were looking forward to playing in division A in 2010. Unfortunately it is a rule of the Devon League that clubs playing in one of the top three divisions of that League must also enter their second XI into the Devon League. Despite Bridestowe's plea that few of the second XI are old enough o drive and that the extra travelling distances involved in playing in the Devon League would put an unacceptable strain on their players and resources was rejected.
This year, therefore, both Bridestowe's sides will be playing in the Devon League. This will be a considerable challenge in many ways for a small, friendly, family club but is one to which they will doubtless be equal.
Bridestowe would welcome players and sponsors to strengthen both their on field and financial positions in 2010.
