SOME readers maybe fed up hearing about the EU elections but all is not doom and gloom. I would just like to offer my congratulations to the council staff who managed and undertook the count. I represented the Green Party when the EU votes were counted on Sunday, May 27. The count took place at the council offices and all the main parties were present. The atmosphere was very professional but friendly. The count started at 6.30pm and by 9.30pm all 18,000 votes had been counted very efficiently with a very impressive system for sorting it all out. As a bonus all of the party representatives got on well together, whatever our politics and how ever good or bad our results! The democratic process is important — people have died and are dying for the right to vote. It is good that at least in West Devon some parts of the system are working well.
