A HEAD for heights was a must as the brave knights of the Round Table pitted their wits against the latest extreme adventure to hit Okehampton. Okehampton Round Table members had an exhilarating evening trying out Okehampton Youth Hostel's newly opened High Ropes course at its new site — Adventure Okehampton, Bracken Tor. Anna Lucking, groups co-ordinator at the hostel, said: 'Suspended 40ft above the ground, our high rope climbing course is an exciting series of challenges that test skill, agility and courage of all abilities. 'It's made up of six different elements containing numerous physical and mental challenges such as Jacob's Ladder, which is great for promoting teamwork, or the Leap of Faith for individuals to boost personal confidence.' The course cost £40,000 and is part of an £800,000 investment in Adventure Okehampton's Bracken Tor site. It was recently handed over to Bracken Tor by specialist contractors from Scotland. The Youth Hostel, which opened eleven years ago, is now the largest of its kind in the South West and the biggest activity centre on Dartmoor. Its main objective is to provide activities to people of all ages, visitors and local people. The hostel has, for the third year running, secured the contract to provide a residential summer camp for young people under the Youth Hostel Association's 'Do It 4 Real' scheme, which is supported by the Department for Children and offers subsidised places on the camp to young people living in England. Anyone interested in conquering their fear of heights should contact the hostel.
