AN architectural historian will be visiting Belstone Village Hall next Saturday (November 21) to discuss the distinctive Dartmoor Longhouse.
Prof Paul Oliver, who is the author of numerous books including the influential 'Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World', will give an illustrated talk on 'Longhouses' at 7.30pm in the hall.
The Dartmoor Longhouse is a distinctive style of building with more than 100 surviving examples.
Built on a slope, a cross passage would separate the lower end — or shippon — where the cattle lived from the humans who occupied the upper end.
The Longhouse in one form or another is also recognised in many other cultures worldwide. This form of architecture will be discussed.
Refreshments will be available and donations accepted for village hall funds.
