ON Friday, August 22, the Sticklepath and Okehampton Conservation Group spent the day helping to clear around Gidleigh Tor. This is their third visit and each time the tor becomes more accessible and exposed. Mark Bailey has been managing the woods for the past four years along with his partner Karen, since his family bought it in 1998. Gidleigh Tor had been hidden by large conifers and gorse. Now with a felling licence to extract the conifers and working with the Forestry Commission, the change is amazing. The land willbe re-planted with native trees more in keeping with the sensitive Dartmoor landscape. Local people and Dartmoor walkers will be able to stand on the Gidleigh Tor and have a 360 degrees view with Kestor, Hounds Tor and Haytor all visible. We are hoping to have a permissive footpath in place to the Tor — Mariners' Way already runs through the woods and is very popular. The StOC group will be at the Tor again on Friday, December 19 if anyone would like to join us. Karen Longworth Gidleigh
