THE MAGIC of Christmas can be discovered aboard the Polar Express at Dartmoor Railway this year, one of only two locations in the whole country selected for the UK launch of this experience.
Inspired by the hit Warner Bros film 'The Polar Express' and book by Chris Van Allsburg, the officially licensed train rides are coming to the UK for the first time from November 16 to December 30 in what will be the biggest event to date for Dartmoor Railway.
Departing from Okehampton Station, the Polar Express will make a mystical one-hour round trip to Bow, visiting the North Pole.
Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, pyjama-clad passengers will relive the magic of the story and see their favourite characters come to life.
During the journey, the conductor will punch tickets and chefs will serve hot chocolate, just like in the film.
Passengers will also enjoy a sing-song and a special reading of the Van Allsburg classic. At the North Pole, Santa will board the train to greet the children and will be giving a special sleigh-bell to all those who believe.
County, borough and town councillor for Okehampton Christine Marsh said she had already booked her seat: 'It is so exciting. There are only two places in England that will have this experience and we are one of them. What a wonderful opportunity for Okehampton, so let's embrace it.'
Ed Ellis, president of British American Rail Services, which operates Dartmoor Railway, said: 'We're excited about bringing The Polar Express experience to the UK.
'We have delighted children and their parents and grandparents at locations across the US for years, and the story's messages of hope and belief are ideal for the holiday season.'
Events manager at the railway Adam Street said: 'The Polar Express will be our biggest event to date and is expected to attract many new visitors to the old railway and Okehampton.
'It is fantastic to be associated with such a famous brand and the whole team is having lots of fun planning for this very festive service.'
Children will be encouraged to wear their pyjamas to keep in the spirit of the story, Okehampton Station will be decked out in Christmas decorations, and there will be a special Polar Express gift shop.
Trains will depart at 5pm and 7.30pm on most dates, prices start from £20 per adult and £15 per child.
