MORE than 250 children in Okehampton turned out to take part in the National Play Day celebration activities coordinated by the West Devon Play Forum.
The West Devon Play Forum staged two events, one each in Tavistock and Okehampton. Due to the forecast for heavy rain, the plan to hold the events outside changed, and the play day moved to the Parklands Leisure Centre in Okehampton.
Free play activities were put on by the Childrens Centre, Exbourne Pre-School, Rainbow Pre-School, Okehampton Community Recreation Association (OCRA), Devon Youth Service, Devon Information Service for Children (DISC), West Devon Borough Council, Chloe the Clown and Totsy Turvy soft play which included art and craft activities, sport and games, face painting, bouncy castle, soft play and badge making.
Cllr Mandy Govier, Chair of the West Devon Play Forum, said: Play is an essential part of every childs life and is vital to their emotional and physical development.
Research shows that, through play, children learn about themselves and the world around them, develop confidence, self-esteem and creativity.
The two play days this year were a resounding success and enjoyed by all.
This years play day events were supported by West Devon Play Forum, Devon County Council, West Devon Borough Council, Tavistock Town Council, and Parklands Leisure Centre.
