A LEARNER, who was recognised as the ‘top student’ at this year’s Duchy College Stoke Climsland prize day, has secured his dream of a place at university.
Liam Scorer, who lives in Yelverton, was diagnosed with Asperger’s and severe anxiety, but he has not let that get in his way and is now starting a course at Plymouth University studying BSc animal conservation.
Liam joined Duchy College in 2007, completing his level 1, 2 and then 3 National Certificates in animal management, before progressing on to the FdSc in animal health and management.
Liam said: ‘My time at Duchy College was exciting and nothing short of amazing. Mum would say I’ve come on leaps and bounds! I really enjoyed the biology elements of what I’ve studied, particularly the dissections, and the support and advice from staff has been amazing.’

Wartime letters inspire Okehampton writer's novelLiam impressed his tutors on a regular basis with his dedication and hard work, which led to his award at the prize day, held in June. As he starts the next part of his journey, Liam is already planning ahead and aiming to complete a PhD.
Course manager at Duchy College Michelle Chappell said: ‘Liam should be delighted with his success and truly deserved the top student award in recognition of his developmental journey both academically and as a practitioner.
‘Liam not only demonstrated huge empathy and a natural ability to work with animals, but has now enhanced his abilities with the application of theory to practice to support all management and care that he provides. Liam is an exemplar of what can be achievable and is now looking forward to his progression with Plymouth University.’
