ONE of Okehampton's premier events of the year promises plenty of festive fun when Edwardian Evening brightens a winter's evening on Thursday, December 4.

Organised by Okehampton and District Chamber of Trade there will be plenty for shoppers to do and see when they take advantage of the late night opening, with carol singers to lift the spirit with their music and bring Christmas closer.

Father Christmas on his sleigh will be on hand on the night, giving out sweets to children.

The town centre will be adorned with overhead decorations and more than 200 lit Christmas trees — adding to the atmosphere will be music from an original barrel organ.

Ian Bailey, chamber chairman, said: 'This event seems to increase its popularity each year.

'We have the road closed from 6pm to 9pm so people can wander around without the worry of traffic. Many shops offer a 'little cheer' to enhance your evening. It all makes for a very enjoyable evening in Okehampton.'

Father Christmas will be in the Museum of Dartmoor Life from 6 pm and there will be various stalls throughout Fore Street and Red Lion Yard.

The Arcade will be alive with entertainment throughout the evening when there will be magic, balloon modelling and face painting for all to enjoy.

In the week running up to Edwardian Evening some shops in the Arcade are offering a free draw when some lucky shoppers will win a voucher for £50, £30 or £20.

Making the mouth water will be a traditional hog roast, with Phil Martin of A L Martin and Son outside his shop in Fore Street offering delicious pork baps. All profits from the hog roast will help maintain the Okehampton Christmas Lights.

Mr Bailey added: 'If you want a break from shopping, a good way to enhance the Christmas spirit is to join in the carol service in Red Lion Yard that starts at 7 pm.

'If you don't feel like singing, just enjoy the music of Okehampton Silver Band who accompany the carols.

'Start your Christmas in Okehampton in a traditional way, with a delightful atmosphere and a chance to enjoy shopping without the hassle and cost of city parking.'
