Okehampton Town Council parks committee has agreed to take action to curb the actions of irresponsible dog owners in Simmons Park.
Councillors discussed the issues of dog fouling and dog attacks in the park at the recent parks committee meeting. In a letter to the Times, chairman of the committee Cllr David Weekes wrote: 'Members of the public may be aware of the increasing number of dog owners taking their animals to Simmons Park for exercise.
'However, some irresponsible dog owners allow their dogs to defecate on the playing fields, which are used by football clubs, children and many other voluntary groups, which obviously creates risks to other users.
'I am also aware of a minimal amount of dog attacks on people and other dogs, and wish to control these problems.
'Accordingly, the council has agreed to increase its dog warden patrols, look closely at its bylaws with a wish to implement more regularly, and engage on a training initiative for dog owners who use the park. Your co-operation would be much appreciated.'
While the issue of dog fouling is ongoing, dog attacks recently came into prominence following the news of a vicious attack in the park on Sunday June 26.
Barry Evans, whose dog was the victim of the attack, said: 'It is a big issue. If you know your dog isn't good around other dogs or children, put a muzzle on them.
'This is a very concerning situation, and it is a topic with a great strength of feeling from the local community.
'I know a lot of people are very concerned about out of control dogs in our local park, and the potential implications this has to the safety of our children and much loved dogs.'
