Spin instructor Amy Paddon and her student Jacob Powell are raising money for charity in a 12-hour spin session tomorrow (December 10).
In a first for charity Sport in Mind, which helps people with mental health problems through sporting activities, Amy and Jacob will complete the 12-hour long session at Parklands Leisure Centre in Okehampton, starting first thing in the morning.
Amy said: ’I suggested to my class that I would like to do a 12-hour spin for charity and one of my regulars, Jacob, offered to join me.
’We are going to be starting at eight and have spoken with Sport in Mind, which we think is the perfect charity.’
Sport in Mind will be sending a representative to the Parklands Leisure Centre on the day and will provide the spinners with banners, merchandise and T-shirts.
The fundraisers plan to raise at least £1,000 and have so far received £975 in pledges - £900 in total from two local businesses, including £200 from Edworthy’s Concrete, and £75 from a GoFundMe page, which they recently set up.
Amy said that based on the public’s reaction they might easily surpass their £1,000 target.
She added: ’So far it’s been really pretty impressive what people are saying about it and I think it will be quite popular. No one’s apparently done it before.’
Amy and Jacob will not leave the bikes for the 12 hours except for toilet breaks which will be staggered so that one of them is always cycling and will eat and drink on the bikes.
