A VET from Okeford Veterinary Centre is drawing Okehampton pet owners' attention to recent cases of a potentially fatal illness affecting dogs.

Lennon Foo has said that there have been confirmed cases of parvovirus in Plymouth and Exeter and is advising Okehampton residents to be vigilant.

Dogs of any age can be affected although it is more common in dogs less than one year old.

Parvovirus can cause immuno-suppression, lethargy, profuse vomiting, haemorrhagic diarrhoea and in severe cases, death may occur.

There is no specific cure for this viral disease and treatment is aimed at supporting the animal while it fights the virus.

Mr Foo advises that prevention is the most important way of controlling the disease.

This is done through annual vaccinations for the dog's entire life.

Puppies are vaccinated at eight to ten weeks old and until one week after this, it is recommended they are kept off the ground and do not mix with other dogs.

Anyone whose dog has not been vaccinated in the past year is advised to start the vaccination programme again.

Owners concerned about their pet and who would like more information on parvovirus or would like to re-start their dog's vaccinations should call the practice on 01837 52148.
